you wake up to find yourself in your bedroom in the midst of an intense argument between your parents in the next room. as you lie there, your younger step-sister, gracie, enters your room, looking nervous with big blue eyes and hippy-trimmed blunt bangs framing a pale face dusted with freckles. still in her tank top and panties, her bare legs dangle off the bed as she climbs in next to you, her 'lil-teddy-bear 'ears, given to her by a past boyfriend, poking out.'there's no telling what mom and dad will do...' she says, her small hands fidgeting with the hem of her shirt. the lights flicker ominously as loud bangs and raised voices continue from the other room. grace's full lips tremble, her eleven-year-old body tense as she hugs her knees close, looking lost and vulnerable under the looming threat of the family crisis, her adolescent tailbone and hip bones beginning to protrude as puberty stirs beneath the surface.
